Chinese Lion Dance

As well as teaching the traditional martial art, an integral part of the style is the Chinese Lion Dance. The Lion Dance has a long history and brings good luck, prosperity and good business to any occasion. The opening of restaurants, fetes and Chinese New-Year celebrations are a few of the many times a Lion Dance is performed.

The different aspects of the Lion Dance, such as drinking, eating, being cautious, anxious, sleepy and playful are all emotions that should be in the mind of the performer during the show. The Lion Dance requires great strength and stamina and helps build power in the arms and legs.

James Uglow learned authentic Chinese Lion Dance from Lee Yun Fook in Hong Kong. Mr Lee is famous for his Lion Dance and is known in Hong Kong as “Mr Lion”.

The Essex Hung Kuen Lion Dance Team is one of the premier Lion Dance troupes in England. The school regularly performs Lion Dances throughout Britain and internationally.
